The Kashi Vishwanath Temple is the soul of Varanasi and one of the most sacred Hindu temples in the world. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas (the most auspicious Shiva temples).

Here is everything you need to know about this legendary temple in English:

1. Historical Significance

  • The "Golden" Temple: The temple is famous for its three gold-plated domes. In 1835, Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab donated about 1,000 kg of pure gold to plate the temple's towers.

  • Ancient Heritage: While the temple has been mentioned in the Puranas for thousands of years, the current structure was built in 1780 by the Maratha queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore.

  • The Spiritual Heart: It is believed that a visit to the temple and a dip in the river Ganga leads to Moksha (liberation from the cycle of birth and death).

2. The New Kashi Vishwanath Corridor

In 2021, a massive renovation project called the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor was completed.

  • Direct Access: Previously, the temple was hidden behind narrow, crowded lanes. Now, the corridor connects the temple directly to the Ganga River (Lalita Ghat).

  • Spaciousness: The complex has expanded from roughly 3,000 square feet to about 5 lakh square feet, making it much easier for pilgrims to walk and meditate.

3. Unique Rituals

  • Sapta Rishi Aarti: This is a world-famous evening ritual where seven priests perform a synchronized aarti. It is an incredibly powerful and rhythmic experience.

  • Sparsh Darshan: At certain times, devotees are allowed to enter the inner sanctum and actually touch the Jyotirlinga. (Note: During peak rush or VIP visits, this may be restricted to "Jal Arpan" or pouring water from outside).

The Legend of the Jyotirlinga

According to mythology, Lord Shiva manifested himself here as a pillar of light (Jyoti) to settle a dispute between Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu about who was supreme. Because it is the "Light of Shiva," the city is also called Kashi (The City of Light).
